...a project about handmade books on a journey of collaborative discovery...
Everything has to start somewhere & this not so little book is the first in a series of handmade journals on a journey! It was made for the #areyoubookenough monthly book arts challenge & in the process it has turned into a new adventure!
The story is...I am a total book nerd,(always reading more than one book at a time!), mix that with a love of words & creative writing,(see Amotisse tab), paper & a background in fibre/textiles art & costumes,(gosh, I'm all over the place!), it's hard to separate my passions...they all magically fit together.
Speaking of magic...it imbues creativity, even more so when creating with others. The energy that results through working with others is so powerful and I want more of it! So I started thinking what if I combine my love of raw, tactile art & my curiosity about the life of objects into something that people can interact with, making it even more magical!?
Et voila, the vessels of creative connection came to be.
Naturally, there is more inspiration behind this than I can poke a stick at! Have you heard of #thesketchbookproject #1000journals #moreloveletters not to mention a long list of books I've read like The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan, Words in deep blue by Cath Crowley, 100 Remarkable Feats of Xander Maze by Clayton Zane Comber & The Binding by Bridget Collins. A huge shout out to all the amazing online creative communities like @areyoubookenough @handmadebookclub @bookartsstudio @willa.wanders to name a few, you fill me with awe & gratitude every day.
I will blog more information as the vessels spread their paper wings...for now, taking little steps to put it all in place...then slow steps as contributions begin to flow! I’m super excited (& nervous) to send these books out live...can’t wait to see how they evolve! ❤️❤️❤️😍 Hope you follow them with me.
project update, May 2023... It’s almost two years since the first five vessels began their travels, and it didn’t take long for me to realise that the most challenging aspect of this project is not being able to follow the journey of the vessels in the way I had imagined. It's been some time now since I've seen or heard where they are, so I can only have faith in the creative universe that they are fulfilling their intended purpose. If you are a current holder of a vessel, please document, tag and post online, for others to see.
This has been a bittersweet learning curve, which made me question how much control I want or need? Obviously more than what I have! Will new vessels be sent out randomly or shared differently, and how much would that influence or change the outcome? So I decided to experiment and #vessel6hands began collecting contributions at Dubbo Art Fair in 2022 and is currently in Coonabarabran.
Alongside this, I also branched out and created a vessel of connection and place, after receiving a grant, which allowed me to venture into community arts. This vessel is very much like the others except it is inspired by a specific place, collecting local stories of connection to place. The town of Wellington, NSW, are the proud custodians of this vessel…
